NDP

'Once in a lifetime' doesnt even begin to describe the NDP experience which ive had. Sure, there were times when i felt downcast. I started to question the whole concept of the mobile column. The long hours spent servicing the vehicles, the numerous weekends spent down at Tuas and the Padang... it could get quite overwhelming. However, i understand now that NDP is far from an event full of banalities; rather, it is a display of our people's strength, unity, perseverance and cohesiveness. As part of the mobile column, i am able to grasp the fact that perfection comes at a price. A tremendous amount of effort, concentration and willpower was put into the execution of the drive-pass; so much so that even the most discerning viewer would not be able to pick up any subtle flaws or nuances.

You might ask, which was the most memorable part of the whole NDP experience for me? Being one of the reserves, i did not have the opportunity to drive past the president. Im sure that would have been particularly noteworthy. However, what i really enjoyed was the drive to the Bishan heartlands. The atmosphere there and then needs to be experienced to be understood. Every junction, every stretch of road was packed with people who were there to show their support for us. Passer-bys stopped and stared, slowly breaking into smiles as we drove past them. Images of the kids along the way, though, are what i would archive and file under the 'Treasured Memories' section in my brain. The tentative looks on their faces, a hesitant wave, jubilant exclamations. So many different expressions and reactions from them, each and every one serving as a justification for all the hard work put in.

NS might be many things, but you cant deny that, every once in a while, it provides you with experiences and memories which will stay with you for a very very long time.
